Tibetan Buddhist hand-held prayer wheel / mani wheel displaying repoussé copper bronze floral work, lotus motifs, Eight Auspicious Symbols and the Tibetan syllables Om Mani Padme Hum repeated on the drum. Still retaining the original paper scroll, lacquer seal remnants to the base of the handle. 1920-50.

The mantra Om Mani Padme Hum is not just embossed into the repoussé copper bronze drum, it's printed repeatedly on a tightly wound manuscript scroll inside the cylinder. It's the mantra of Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion.

In Nepalese and Tibetan traditions, each revolution of the wheel is said to multiply the spiritual merit of reciting the mantra. It has much the same meritorious effect as orally reciting the prayers.

The drum is a copper alloy, brass with traces of bronze. The handle is turned and lacquered wood with a copper ferrule. The finial takes on a pine-cone or stylised lotus bud form, and  cast in bronze.

These three mani wheels date back to the first half of the 20th c, the verdigris oxidation to the copper joints, the deformation and smoothness on the repoussé rims, and the aged-browned paper and use of natural carbon or soot ink bearing witness to this fact.
