Vic Lawston (1908-1998) ran a popular mail-order magic business called "House of 1000 Mysteries," which sold magic tricks, jokes, and novelties primarily through a catalog. The catalog, known as the "Giant Surprise Catalog," featured original artwork by Lawston, promoted the slogan, "When you think of tricks, remember Vick's," and often included a cartoon monkey named Pumpernickel. The business operated out of various locations including Monroe, Connecticut, and Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
