Description

This Hagi tea bowl was made by the late 12th Tahara Tobei, a holder of Yamaguchi Prefecture's intangible cultural property.
Comes with matching box (two-sided slats) and matching cloth.

*The inscription on the box (Image 19) and the inscription on the tea bowl (Image 18) are different, so it is likely that the antique dealer matched boxes from different works by the same artist (from different eras).

[The 12th Tahara Tobei (1925-1991)]
Born in Nagato City, Yamaguchi Prefecture in 1925.
In 1944, while attending Yamaguchi High School, he was drafted and sent to Manchuria.
He was detained in Siberia in 1945 and demobilized in 1948.
After returning from the war, he studied under his eldest brother, the 11th Tahara Tobei.
In 1981, he took over the name of the 12th Tobei following the sudden death of his eldest brother.
In 1969, he first exhibited his "Hagi Tea Bowl" at the 16th Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition. The following year, he became a full member of the Japan Crafts Association, and served as a director of the association from 1981 to 1988.
In 1981, he was recognized as a holder of Yamaguchi Prefecture's designated intangible cultural property (Hagi ware).
In 1985, he received the China Culture Award.
Died in 1991.
