Please take a moment to read the description, condition and browse the photos. Description: Albert Taylor Warsaw (Born 1899) was active/lived in New York. Albert Warsaw is known for being a painter, designer, lithographer and illustrator.
This is a charcoal drawing of men playing checkers in New York's Washington Square Park area. This drawing appears to date to the 1940-50's. It is really well done and needs a nice mat and frame job. The drawing is estate stamped on the back.
Measures; image 11 1/2" x 16", with margins 17" x 22"
Chess tables have been a staple of New York City public parks for decades. While the first ones appeared in parks during the 1940s, the popularity of “street chess” as it is known, came about beginning in the 1960s when a man named Bobby Hayward set up a chess set on top of a garbage can at 43rd Street and 8th Avenue. By the late 1960s, chess tables peppered Washington Square Park, occupying the park’s southwest corner. Here players could compete against famed world champions like Bobby Fischer, Kamran Shirazi, and Joel Benjamin.

Condition:

The actual black charcoal drawing is in great condition, the margins show black from fingerprints, small stains, worn corners, residual tabbing to the top margin, etc. Once the drawing is matted and framed, it's going to look fantastic. Please view all photos as they are part of the description.
