An antique Chinese seated bronze Buddha seated on a deep two lotus petal throne.

The particular style of this bronze Buddha, the casting and the deep rounded lotus petals tiered base with beaded fillet above suggest a late Ming to early Qing dynasty attribution, roughly 17th - 18th c. However, later Qing bronzes from the19th c share similarities so, erring on the side of caution, we should assume a 19th c attribution, with the proviso it might well be earlier.

Typically, late Ming /early Qing Chinese Buddhas have a rounded face with arched eyebrows and a small smile, the robe draped over one shoulder and a plain sanghati without Tibetan jewellery, as here. 

Whilst the left hand rests on the lap in Dhyana mudra, the gesture of meditation, the right arm is raised, but not in the classic abhaya or varada mudras of protection and charity. Instead it's a more regionalised pose often seen in Chinese depictions of the Buddha, sometimes associated with calling for rain or teaching gestures. 

This bronze has developed a natural green patina, and surface wear commensurate with considerable age. The core to the open base is intact and stable.
