Fairbanks Morse's Consolidation line showed
great promise early on and secured multiple orders from several
railroads. Only five signed up for the 4-axle version, but most of
those that did went back for more. The locomotives were available in
multiple horsepower configurations and with several options like dynamic
brakes and steam generators for passenger service. Their rounded lines
were as distinctive as the sounds from the FM opposed cylinder diesel
engine. And although these 4-axle versions were generally purchased for
freight service, some did see passenger roles as well.Ultimately, the
FM engines were not the reliable workhorses the railroads expected.
Some, like the New York Central, remotored their C-Liners with EMD
blocks to extend their lives. Others worked the engines as long as they
could and retired them quietly in the early 1960s. For Lionel's second
C-Liner run, we're featuring these 4-axle locomotives for all of the
roads that owned them. Stand out details include the Mars lights on the
Milwaukee Road units and the Pennsylvania's trainphone radio antenna.
Models are also available for the first time with 4-digit addressing and
SuperBass B units! All A and B units are available separately so you
can run these as you wish - a classic A-B-A configuration or mixed and
matched with other locomotives. A units feature front ElectroCouplers
and non-operating rear couplers for better close-coupling. The B units
feature a non-operating front and rear ElectroCoupler. These
locomotives are sure to add some character to your roster as a stand out
from all of those EMD and Alco covered wagons.
