The Little Luxart Library was an evolution of the Little Leather Library Corporation, which was founded in New York City by Charles and Albert Boni, Harry Scherman, and Max Sackheim. Originally, from 1916 to 1923, the Little Leather Library Corporation published miniature editions of literary classics, selling over 25 million copies through various retail outlets like department stores and by mail.
In the early 1920s, due to rising leather costs associated with World War I, the company switched from using real leather to synthetic materials for the book covers, which were then branded as "Little Luxart" books. This change in material led to the rebranding under Robert K. Haas, Inc., who took a controlling interest and renamed the company from Little Leather Library to Little Luxart Company. The new "Little Luxart Library" books were identifiable by their shiny red leatherette covers and included a range of titles from Shakespeare's plays to works by various authors, still maintaining the miniature format.
By 1925, the Little Luxart Library had ceased publishing new volumes, but not before leaving a significant mark on the publishing world with its innovative marketing strategies, such as offering free books with subscriptions to "The Literary Digest" or as gifts in Whitman's chocolate boxes.
