Offered here is a rare and highly collectible set that brings together literature and theatre history: August Strindberg – Plays, Volume II (Boston, 1912, L. E. Bassett) along with an original program from The Stage Society of New York, Gaiety Theatre, dated February 28, 1916, for the performance of Strindberg’s play Easter.

The book contains four of Strindberg’s important works — Comrades, Facing Death, Pariah, and Easter — translated into English by Edith and Warner Oland. Bound in its original blue cloth with gilt lettering, it shows some edge wear and rubbing to the spine and corners, as well as light soiling to the covers, but the interior remains clean and well-preserved. A facsimile reproduction of Strindberg’s handwritten note is included at the front. This early American edition, printed in 1912, is itself scarce and sought after among collectors of modern drama.

Adding to the rarity, this copy comes together with an authentic theatre program from 1916, documenting the New York staging of Easter. The cast featured notable actors of the era such as Walter Hampden and Ivy Troutman. The program also contains a seating plan of the Gaiety Theatre and detailed production notes. Despite natural age toning and minor chipping, the program remains in very good condition and is fully legible.

This is a unique combination of an early Strindberg edition and a genuine piece of American theatre ephemera, now more than a century old. Very few such sets exist on the market, making this offering a rare opportunity for collectors of August Strindberg, theatre memorabilia, and early 20th-century literature. Both items will be carefully packed and shipped with tracking.
