"Baston first designed Franklin as one of his Favorite Americans series for his retail stores. A year after it was produced, Baston was commissioned to create a special piece with a penstand base inscribed 'Compliments Curtis Plan Representative.' It was used by Curtis salesmen (Saturday Evening Post and other magazines) to promote sales. The Franklin and Post tie-in continued in 1955 with the Keystone Readers' Service figurine (reads 'Ben Franklin Award--Keystone Readers' Service' in heavy base), also used in Curtis promotions."
