‘THE HOARD’
AUSTRALIAN
1927 PARLIAMENT
HOUSE CANBERRA
COMMEMORATIVE
FLORIN FROM A
LAWSONS AUCTION
LONG AGO
PART OF ANTIQUE DEALER’S PERSONAL
COIN HOARD OVER 30 YEARS
PROVENANCE BELOW
Photos taken with
and without
a flash.
This listing is for an
Australian
.925 Silver florin
struck for the
opening of the old Parliament
House in Canberra in 1927.
It is a high grade example
of this coin.
On the Obverse you can
make
out the 8 pearls on the
King’s
crown – all either a bit
rubbed
or lightly struck but
still there.
The king’s facial
features seem
particularly nice on
this coin
for some reason but I
might
be dreaming.
Some general surface
marks
suggest at least some
time
in circulation but not
too much.
Light toning.
The Reverse side shows
two
steps on the building which
hopefully you can see in
the photos.
When viewed under the
cameras
unforgiving lens you can
see some
surface marks and
rubbing to the
highest parts generally
ie. the
head of the Mace in
particular
(called scepters by
some)
but not much really.
It’s surface is relatively
shiny both
Sides with a little
toning but not
a lot.
Perhaps it would grade
as
VF or EF?
Please Note:
I’m an Antiques Dealers NOT a
Numismatic dealer and so not
qualified to officially grade coins.
**As you can see in the last photo this
coin is one of seven coins
in our ‘hoard’
that all came from the same auction
of James R Lawson Pty Ltd
(who have been around
for a very long time!)
All the florins have
come from the same dealer
(see writing) and possibly on of the 1937 crowns
too and they’ve all wound up in the same Lawsons
auction (all have the sub number 5127
sequential lot numbers).
This 1927 Parliament House florin was
Lot
365
I think the auction must
have been
in the 1970s or 1980s.
I say this because I’m
fairly sure Tony;
the other half of
Kollectik1 and me;
had these in his
possession when
we met in 1991.
All a very long time
ago.
Anyway, Antique dealers
call this
Provenance and it’s a big deal in our
world but not sure if
the coin collectors
feel quite the same way but just thought
I’d tell you anyway.
This is also the reason
I’m not taking
this coin out of its cardboard
holder
as I don’t want to lose
any of the
Lawson’s stickers etc.

Very nice example of a
higher
Grade coin
gVF or better?
Have compared it to
other coins and
stands up well against
other coins
unofficially graded as
Extra Fine
by well established coin
dealers.
See above and the photos
Please Note:
I’m an Antiques Dealers
NOT a
Numismatic dealer and so
not
qualified to officially
grade coins.
NO cleaning done by us on any of
the coins we are listing.
Our knowledge re error coins,
rarity, mintage etc is limited
so could be some real gems
amongst all our lots.
THE HOARD
The coins we are listing have been
picked up from estates we have
purchased over the last 35+ years.
Thousands of coins from around
the world and covering 4 centuries
and beyond (1 Roman coin) that we’ve
never had the time to sort through to
sell them so just kept accumulating.
We are now retired (semi) and have
had a great time over the last
few weeks
Noodling and doing a bit of
research
BUT
we were general Antique dealers,
NOT coin dealers and so our knowledge
is limited hence nothing will be
graded
using the official coin grading tables
as it would be guess work by us but
with the help of good clear
photos
and our own assessment of each listing
we feel potential buyers will
have all
the tools required to feel confident and
pleased with their purchase
(see our feedback for happy customers).
We will be selling some bulk lots and/or
groups of coins and some individually
(not getting any younger and not possible
to list them one by one).
Always be reassured we are happy
to answer any questions you may have
and combine postage to the fullest
extent we can (it’s getting costly!)
