This is an antique, 1870, book by James Jackson Jarves (1818 -- 1888).  He was an American newspaper editor, and art critic who is remembered by most as the first American art collector to buy Italian primitives and Old Masters.  In 1871, the Yale University Art Gallery purchased 119 Italian paintings from Jarves.

In "The Art-Idea", Jarves discusses the meanings of beauty in the sculpture, painting, and architecture of America.

The book is very legible and solid: an interesting, antique, 1870 book.  The publisher was a well-known New York book publisher of the 1870's.
