The Houston Cougars' philosophy under Coach John Jenkins has been to win games, not friends. And they were at it again Saturday. Houston, 1-1, returned to those days Saturday when quarterback Donald Douglas, needing only to touch a knee to the ground to end the game, threw a 70-yard touchdown pass as time ran out to finish off a 31-13 victory over Illinois. Last year, however, Houston struggled as teams took advantage of a down season. One of those teams was Illinois, which beat the Cougars in 1991, 51-10.
Douglas came in late in the first half with the Cougars protecting a 9-7 lead and scored on a 6-yard run at the end of a 67-yard drive to give Houston a nine-point cushion.
The Houston defense then put the game away in the fourth quarter. Stephen Dixon recovered a fumble by Illinois quarterback Jason Verduzco in the end zone for a touchdown and Steve Clark later sacked Verduzco in the end zone for a safety.
Craft's field goals came from 37, 42 and 38 yards for Houston in the first half.
Wagner Lester scored on a 1-yard run for Illinois, 2-1, to climax a 76-yard drive in the first period and give the Fighting Illini a 7-3 lead, but the Cougars then scored 20 unanswered points. Verduzco was sacked eight times, while Douglas gained 66 rushing yards and completed 10 of 13 passes for 129 yards.
