Unusual vintage, naïvely hand-carved horn snuff box in the shape of a griffin.
The date of manufacture is unknown but is I believe vintage rather than antique. The eyes are made from what looks like hand-made tacks that gleam when they catch the light. One of the wings form the lid, which is opened by a brass hinge, the box is airtight with the lid being quite tight. There is minimal carved detailing. The box is smooth and tactile although some of the tool marks can still be seen in places.
The inside of the box is clean and does not smell of snuff, so it probably was used either as a pill box or a decorative item.
