Iwate's specialty Nanbu ironware has been developed in the Nanbu ironworking industry against the backdrop of rich and high-quality natural resources such as iron charcoal clay and sand from the Kitakami Mountains and the Kitakami River. Both "Ōshū City" and "Morioka City" have nurtured their respective histories and traditions that have been honed over generations of craftsmen particularly in the modern era known nationwide for their "Nanbu iron teapots." About 800 years ago it is said that the founder of the Hiraizumi Fujiwara culture Fujiwara Kiyohira called craftsmen from Omi no Kuni to produce castings marking the beginning. The "Nanbu iron teapot" is characterized by its unique casting skin and the taste of Matsukaze when boiling water.
They are baked in a furnace at about 800 degrees for 2 hours for gold plating creating an iron oxide film on the inside using ferric oxide and finished through a handmade process. We hope you will enjoy using the "Nanbu iron teapot" that has been created with the connection of hobby and affection for a long time.
Usage instructions:
- Do not wash the inside and outside with tools like a scrubber sand oil detergent etc.
- First put water in the iron teapot and boil a cup of tea (yuzamashi) wrapped in a cloth for about ten minutes. Rinse with water 2-3 times clean the inside and then start using.
- Yellowish scale may adhere to the inside during use. This scale is harmless and contributes to the unique taste of the Nanbu iron teapot so do not forcibly remove it.
- When not in use discard the water remove the lid and heat it on fire to completely dry the inside. Leaving water in can cause rust.
- If gold residue appears put 50g of powdered tea in a cloth boil for about 2-3 hours. The tea residue adheres to the inside providing a gold plating effect.
- To clean the surface wipe with a cloth while boiling water. Wiping with a cloth each time will bring out the unique luster of the Nanbu iron teapot. (Polishing with rice bran etc. will bring out the sheen and prevent rust)
- This teapot can be used on IH cooking heaters. However please use it on medium heat or lower.
This is the traditional casting mold used in making Nanbu iron teapots. It is called a cast mold because it is made by mixing sand water and clay pressing a pattern into it and then firing it at high temperatures. It has the advantage of being able to carve fine patterns but molds are fragile and need to be remade each time. The lengthy modeling process means the final product cannot be supplied in large quantities making it relatively high in price.
