Daiko Sonata Ki-guchi (Remains of Mouth Storehouse) – Arita Uchiyama Townscape to Izumiyama
Walking from the townscape of Arita Uchiyama towards Izumiyama one's eyes will be drawn to a large Ginkgo tree. This Ginkgo tree known as Daiko Sonata Ki is located within the precincts of Izumiyama Benzaiten Shrine. It is likely the largest Ginkgo tree in Japan with an estimated age of about 1 000 years standing at 40m tall with a trunk circumference of 18m and a branch spread of 31m east to west. During the "Autumn Arita Ceramics Festival" held from mid to late November the entire tree's leaves turn yellow creating a romantic walkway with a yellow carpet spread beneath.
Tombai Wall
While walking through the town one may come across peculiar walls that exude a unique atmosphere. These walls known as Tombai walls are made from reused stones that once composed old kilns. Traditional wisdom passed down through generations is evident throughout the town. It can be an enjoyable experience to stroll around and imagine who and what kind of ceramics were once made in these kilns.
