Ogisoju Tree Former Mouth Shop Area
When walking from the townscape of Arita Uchiyama towards Izumiyama a large Ginkgo tree catches the eye along the street. This Ginkgo called the "Ogisoju Tree " is located within the precincts of the Izumiyama Benzaiten Shrine. It is likely the largest Ginkgo tree in Japan with an age of about 1 000 years a height of 40m a trunk circumference of 18m and a branch spread of 31m east to west. During the "Arita Pottery Festival" held from mid to late November the entire tree's leaves turn yellow creating a romantic walking path with a yellow carpet at your feet.
Tonbai Wall
As you walk through the town you may come across unique walls that exude a distinctive atmosphere. These walls called "Tonbai Walls " are made from reused stones that originally formed old kilns. Wisdom handed down from ancient times is alive in various parts of the town. It's intriguing to imagine who and what kind of pottery were once baked in kilns at various places adding to the charm of your stroll.
