Hard-to-find and sought-after by collectors, this Pre-Teen Tressy from American Character stands approximately 14 inches tall and is marked Amer Char 1963 on the back of her neck. Produced only in the mid-1960s, these youthful grow-hair dolls were the charming “little sister” in the Tressy family and remain scarce today, especially in good display condition.

She features the innovative retractable hair mechanism, operated by the round slotted knob on her back (untested and no key included), rooted blonde hair, land the sweet pre-teen facial sculpt that sets her apart from the standard fashion-size Tressy. Her vinyl head, arms, and legs, along with her plastic torso, remain in good vintage condition with only light age-related wear. Eyes open and close smoothly, and her hair retains softness with some play wear.

She has been playfully redressed in a custom purple butterfly outfit with matching hat, and wears glittery silver roller skates with bright pink laces—giving this rare vintage doll a whimsical, updated look. Clothing and skates are later replacements and not original to the doll.

Collector’s Note:
According to the American Character Dolls reference book, the Pre-Teen Tressy is considered hard to find and is a standout in the company’s grow-hair line. Her short production run, charming childlike features, and unique size make her an especially desirable addition to any serious vintage doll collection.

No key, just use one of these substitutes that work just as well:

• Flat-blade screwdriver – Small or medium size, gently turned to retract the hair (carefully to avoid scratching the plastic).

• Coin – A dime or penny can sometimes fit into the slot.

• Butter knife tip – Slim, flat edge works in a pinch.

• DIY key – Some collectors make one from a cut and filed piece of metal or even a plastic bread-tag.

• Reproduction keys – Inexpensive plastic or metal repro keys
