Vintage Kırşehir Saddlebag with Hand-Knitted Wool Additions – c.1930s

This is a rare and soulful Kırşehir saddlebag, approximately 90 years old, carrying the traces of both craftsmanship and daily life from nearly a century ago. Entirely handwoven, it features traditional Anatolian motifs in soft, time-worn hues that have beautifully mellowed into pastel tones over the decades.

Originally used for daily transport on donkeys or camels, this heybe (saddlebag) was reinforced by its owner in a truly unique and heartfelt way: To extend its life and protect the edges from tearing under heavy loads, the user stitched the ribbed cuffs of old, hand-knit wool socks to all four corners. These additions are not only functional but poetic—likely older than the bag itself, and woven from wool that speaks of a bygone era.

The central panel shows signs of use and age-related staining, which are clearly visible in the photos and only add to the authenticity and story of the piece. This saddlebag would make a beautiful collector’s item or a striking decorative element hung over a doorway or wall.

A rare find, full of character and history.
