Cobalt carbonate is the standard blue colourant for ceramic glazes and bodies. It gives a softer, more even blue than cobalt oxide at the same cobalt loading, because the finer particle size disperses more readily and speckles less. Typical glaze additions are 0.5 to 2 percent.

Applications
Blue colourant in ceramic glazes, slips and engobes, blue and lustre effects in glass, pigment manufacture, catalyst preparation, and electroplating and chemical synthesis.

Handling
Cobalt compounds are harmful if inhaled. Use appropriate respiratory protection when weighing or mixing the dry powder.
