Mongkhon (Mongkhon Hua) and Prajiad are important costumes in ancient Muay Thai and are still used in Muay Thai today. Both have cultural, belief and spiritual meanings for the boxers, as follows:

🥋 Mongkhon (Mongkhon or Mongkol)
Description:
  • Mongkhon is a headband for Muay Thai boxers, made of silk or cotton, woven into a circle around the head. Sometimes decorated with thread or beads.

Meaning and beliefs:

  • It is a lucky charm that protects the boxer from danger.
  • It shows respect for the boxing teacher (teacher) or the school to which the boxer belongs.
  • It is a symbol of serious training and acceptance by the boxing teacher.
  • Used in the Muay Thai Wai Khru ceremony before the fight. It is considered a request for blessings from the sacred and ancestors.

Rite:

  • The boxer will wear Mongkhon only during the Wai Khru ceremony.
  • After the ceremony is complete, the boxing teacher will remove the Mongkhon from the head before the actual fight (not during the fight).

🪢 Prajiad (Pra Jiad)
Description:
  • Prajiad is a cloth tied on the arm of the boxer. It is usually a small strip of cloth tied around one or both upper arms.

Meaning and beliefs:

  • It is a protective amulet that brings courage and good luck.
  • In the past, it was believed that the Prajiat was made from the cloth that mothers tied around their children before going to war.
  • Some places use old cloth that has special meaning, such as cloth belonging to family members or boxing teachers.
  • It has spiritual power, helping boxers to be confident and strong-minded.
