For sale are three reel to reel tapes, each with a different "Silhouette" syndicated radio show. Produced by the American Lutheran Church, the show ran from the late 1960s through the early 70s and sought to reach teens through positive messages and rock music. Dubbed "Psychedelic Christian Rock" the show consisted of popular rock songs interspersed with teen interviews. The interviews were conducted in a "Silhouette Shack," a chain of coffee houses also run by the church. Originally created and hosted in 1967 by Pastor John Rydgren, by 1972 the program was broadcast on 525 stations from Maine to California (including WABC) as well as Armed Forces Radio. The tapes are in nice condition and playback (7.5 IPS) is excellent with no issues. All three tapes were enclosed in a plastic bag with slip stating an episode number, air date and music list on the front and return instructions on the back. Two of the them come in the original packaging, which when turned inside out, was prelabeled for return. The third is in a "Nassau" recording tape box. Each of the episodes had a theme and ran for 30 minutes.
Here's the topics included:
Silhouette #261 - Teen Death - March 19, 1972
Silhouette #264 - Prejudice - April 09, 1972
Silhouette #269 - Small Town Life - May 14, 1972
The shows were not for sale and the tapes were meant to be returned and reused, so these they are super rare as no known other copies exist. They are a unique artifact of the emerging hippie scene when "Jesus" and "Freak" were just being linked. Play tested, these are complete shows. FYI: there is several minutes of silence before the programs begin. Be the first (besides me) to hear these shows that aired over 50 years ago.
