Shiunseki (Shiun Stone)

Place of Origin: Around Ofunato City, Iwate Prefecture
Shiunseki is a type of green tuff (schalstein) produced in the Kitakami Mountain Range. It is typically reddish-brown in color, featuring distinctive purple cloud-shaped patterns alongside round green markings. Known for its resistance to flaking, smooth texture, and excellent ink absorption, this stone has long been prized by calligraphers and samurai as a material for inkstones.
According to legend, during the Kamakura period, a monk visiting Choonji Temple found this stone in a river and fashioned it into an inkstone, which was then presented to the Shogun in Kamakura. The Shogun named it the "Shiunseki Inkstone."
Today, the stone is also used for ink painting, display, and as a collector’s item.

Suiseki is the general term for landscape and scenic stones. Suiseki is the most profound of all hobbies, as it allows the viewer to experience the universe from within a single stone. Suiseki and bonsai are said to be two wheels of a cart. Suiseki is the essence of the Japanese sense of beauty, and is the ultimate expression of the taste for natural art. The appreciation of suiseki is a submerged and boundless world of wabi and sabi, a kind of ethereal beauty where the mind is absorbed in nature, where one can look at outstanding landscape scenery stones, figure stones, and patterned stones and feel the whole universe, and where one can blend in with the natural scenery and poem.
