Fudō Myōō Hanging Scroll (不動明王 掛軸)

Japan, Edo Period, 18th century

Polychrome and gold on paper

A striking depiction of Fudō Myōō, the “Immovable Wisdom King” and fierce protector of Buddhist law, painted in vibrant mineral pigments and gold on paper. Fudō stands powerfully upon swirling clouds, framed by a dynamic flaming nimbus—a symbol of purification and divine wrath. His intense expression, glaring eyes, and tightly clenched mouth communicate his unshakable resolve to subdue ignorance and guide beings to enlightenment.

He holds the sword of wisdom (kurikara-ken) in his right hand, used to cut through delusion, while the rope (kebari) in his left binds evil forces. His muscular form and commanding presence are emphasized through bold linework and a warm, earthen palette, accented by ornamental jewelry and sacred markings.

The scroll is mounted in silk borders typical of the Edo period, showing signs of respectful age and temple use. An exceptional representation of esoteric Buddhist devotion.
