Jewish Tales and Legends: Supplementary Readings to the Torah by Mendel G. Glenn
ENGLISH
VG CONDITION, HARDCOVER

It is a fascinating book of tales and legends from the Talmud and Midrash.

The legends and tales that were collected deal with Pentateuchal figures and heros only.

Where the story in the Pentateuch was sufficient for its 'tale value' it was used over the Midrash (eg "Destruction of Sodom and Amorah"; "Wooing of Rebekah"; "Blessings of Jacob" etc. Many of the tales used are from the Sepher Hayashar.

This volume can be used as a good introductory handbook for students in Hebrew Schools to the treasures and wealth of the original Hebrew tales of the Talmud and Midrash. It may also be used as a supplementary reader to the Pentateuch.

Various stories lesser known to those who study the Torah areavailable here, such as 'Falsehood and Curse in the Ark'; 'The Elamites Experience at Sodom'; 'Abraham's Impatience With An Old Man'; 'Pharaoh's Drowning of the Babies' and 'G-D Protects the Babies', 'Moses King of Ethiopia'; and Moses' visit to Heaven before recieving the Torah, descriptions of the size of the giant Og;the imagery of Moses' sight of the Land of Israel and his sight of the experiences of Israel in the future:

'Multitudes of pilgrims march on. Boys and girls, men and women fill the roads. They come from all the corners of the earth; from East and West, from North and South. They carry baskets in their hand, baskets filled with the best of fruit. The pilgrims sing and shout with joy. They sing and say:

"Let us go unto the House of the Lord".

A really fascinating journey into the some of the treasures of the Holy Jewish Books
