Sengen Stone (Sengen-ishi)
Overview
Sengen Stone is a natural stone collected from rivers around Mt. Oosenken (elevation 1,072 m) in southern Hokkaido, particularly in the towns of Fukushima, Matsumae, and Shiriuchi, with the Shiriuchi River being a prominent location. Valued for its distinctive appearance and historical background, Sengen Stone is highly prized as a garden stone and suiseki.
History and Origin
Mt. Oosenken received its name in the early Edo period, in the ninth year of Keicho (1604), when the fifth lord of the Matsumae Domain, Matsumae Yoshihiro, appointed an overseer for gold mining in the area. As a result, the town flourished with rows of houses, leading to the name “Sengen” (literally “Thousand Houses”).
Stones collected from this region were originally referred to as "Oosenken-dake Stone," but the term was considered awkward. Therefore, among stone enthusiasts, the name was standardized to "Sengen Stone."
Sengen Stone was extensively used as garden stones by feudal lords and domain rulers and examples still remain today in places such as the Matsumae Clan’s family temple and Matsumae Park.

Suiseki is the general term for landscape and scenic stones. Suiseki is the most profound of all hobbies, as it allows the viewer to experience the universe from within a single stone. Suiseki and bonsai are said to be two wheels of a cart. Suiseki is the essence of the Japanese sense of beauty, and is the ultimate expression of the taste for natural art. The appreciation of suiseki is a submerged and boundless world of wabi and sabi, a kind of ethereal beauty where the mind is absorbed in nature, where one can look at outstanding landscape scenery stones, figure stones, and patterned stones and feel the whole universe, and where one can blend in with the natural scenery and poem
