Framed triptych of hand-painted Bulgarian Orthodox icons. Virgin Mary & Child. The Wheel of Life. Nativity of Christ. Sept. 2008.

These beautifully executed Bulgarian Orthodox icons were hand-painted in Arbanassi, Bulgaria, a historic village known for its Orthodox monasteries and folk iconography. The artists were Sabka Boyanova and Bokisley Boyarov, two local icon painters.

To the left is Virgin Mary and Child, in a traditional cheek-to-cheek pose executed in a naïve folk-style probably using older frescoes in Arbanassi churches for inspiration.

The Wheel of Life occupies the second panel, with the sun-faced wheel showing zodiac signs and the cyclical nature of life. At the bottom the Mouth of Hell is depicted swallowing sinners and the damned, classic Eastern Orthodox imagery.

The panel to the right depicts the Birth of Christ, with Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus and angels announcing the event.

This triptych of modern Bulgarian Orthodox folk icons was painted in 2003 in Arbanassi, Bulgaria, and framed in Notting Hill Gate in London, and glazed with anti-reflective UV blocking glass. Hooks attached verso for hanging.
