This is a beautiful example of 1930s Fenton jade green glass. The footed swung vase has a strikingly tall and slender silhouette. The thick jade green glass is opaque at the footed base, and becomes translucent and a bit paler as the eye travels up the elongated neck to the mouth. Such a beautiful effect!
It is 11" tall. The round foot is 2 3/4" in diameter. It weighs 10.25 oz.
The piece is in wonderful condition. It has no chips, scratches, cracks or other damages. There is a slight roughness around the circumference of the foot from the unmolding process, mainly tiny blips of extra glass where the two side seams meet the foot, as circled in one of my photos. This seems to be the norm for such vases.
The swung glass vase technique involves first pressing the molten glass into a mold to give the vase its basic shape, then while still pliable, the glassmaker grasps the piece by the base or neck and swings it in a pendulum motion. The swinging motion causes the vase to stretch and elongate at the neck, while also creating a unique asymmetrical or ruffled mouth. Thus the mold marks visible at the base of a swung vase begin to vanish as they go up the sides toward the elongating neck.
