The atlas “Portolan charts of the Black Sea” is a continuation of the publication of the series “Monuments of Cartography of Ukraine”, initiated by Veniamin Kordt in 1899. The new edition is a collection of reproductions of ancient sea charts of the Black and Azov Seas of the 14th-17th centuries, stored in the libraries of Germany, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Italy, the USA, Canada, Australia and Japan. Portolan, portulan is a medieval handwritten sea chart, which was most often made on parchment. The main feature of these maps is a detailed line of the sea coast with the names of geographical objects written perpendicular to it, a network of rhumb lines and a linear scale. The atlas of reproductions “Portolan charts of the Black Sea” is the first attempt in Ukraine to generalize knowledge about ancient maps of the country’s sea areas. All portolans are presented in chronological order, highlighting their most important characteristics and with brief notes about the authors and the history of the creation of these maps.
