Sanbokan (Citrus sulcata) is a traditional Japanese citrus cultivar valued for its balanced acidity, refined aroma, and versatility in both fresh consumption and processing. The fruit is medium to large in size with a slightly flattened round shape and a moderately thick rind that peels relatively easily. Its skin matures to a rich yellow-orange color, indicating full physiological ripeness rather than lemon-type coloration. The flesh is pale orange to light amber, tender, and notably juicy. Flavor expression combines gentle sweetness with refreshing acidity, creating a clean and elegant taste profile. Sanbokan is especially appreciated for juice production, marmalade, and traditional Japanese confections due to its aromatic oils and stable acid structure. Trees show moderate vigor and consistent productivity under subtropical conditions.
