HOW TO STENCIL
Dry Brush Stencilling
Here we will describe how to stencil using the dry brush method of stencilling.
It is our favourite method.
Equipment you will need
Assorted stencil brushes with flat head for stippling.
An old rag, piece of towelling or paper towel
A non porous material to use as a palette. Paper or plastic plates are ideal
A jar of water
A repositionable spray mount
Newspaper
A quick drying water based paint
Colours
We include colour prints of chosen designs to act as a colour guide.
You can match the colours used on the print with the paint you buy.
There is no reason why you should not use a completely different colour scheme.
It is fun to experiment with colour
Method
Place the stencil face down on some newspaper.
Spray the back of the stencil with a light mist of repositionable spray mount.
We use 3M and it comes in a blue can.
Experience will teach you how much you need but remember not to be heavy handed
as you can always add more tack at a later date.
Put some paint on the palette.
Dip the brush in the paint and then remove as much paint as you can on an old rag.
Now, with a rapid up and down movement of the vertically held brush,
stipple the paint through the cut shapes.
The harder it is to apply the paint, the better the result.
Using a dry brush like this helps to prevent seepage of the paint under the cut shapes.
It should result in nice clean edges to the finished piece.
The stencil can be peeled back a little from time to time to check on progress.
Gradually build up the required depth of colour by repeats of the stippling through the shapes
after the paint from the previous application has dried.
Shading
Shading can be achieved by first applying a lighter shade first to the shapes.
Next, with a clean brush, stipple the darker colour through the shapes.
Apply many more of the darker stipples to the edges and then fade out
the darker stipples as you move the brush away from the edges.
Cleaning the Stencil
The stencil can be gently washed in warm soapy water.
