Sheer Sound's Tales of South African Gospel collects 16 examples of contemporary gospel, a genre that enjoys immense popularity in the region. Some of the slicker tracks, like Lundi's "Thembele Kuye" and Zodwa's "Indlela," have more in common with American urban CCM, but choir-heavy cuts from Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Amadodana Ase Wesile, and St. Thomas YMG dutifully utilize the rich harmonies and melodies that fuel much of South African folk music. ~ James Christopher Monger
