The Detroit-Leland Hotel is a historic landmark property in Detroit, Michigan built in 1926-7. It's named after Henry Martyn Leland, the founder of both Cadillac and Lincoln and boasted 800 fully air-conditioned rooms with baths. It featured an ornate grand Italian Renaissance/Beaux Arts design, with an impressive two-story lobby ornamented in gold accents and sculptural details. The grand ballroom has been converted to the Leland City Club, a cornerstone of Detroit's goth/industrial music scene. The building today hosts a mix of long-term apartments, extended stay rooms and commerical spaces. This matchbook is hard to date: it references the Grenadier Room and Lounge on the inside cover and uses the "choice beverages" euphemism to refer to the serving of alcohol. The top spine of the matchbook advertises "Noted for Friendliness". We suspect a time period of the late 1940s and 1950s. It's unstruck, complete and in very good condition having only minor wear along the right front edge. It's a nice testament to the resilience and survival of Detroit.
