Symptoms of compressor failure include:

• Warm air enters the cabin when the A/C is turned on.
• A squeaking or whining noise from the engine.
• Coolant leaking under the car.

A/C Compressor Replacement:

1. Determine if the refrigerant is pure. If it is pure, it can be reused; if not, it must be properly disposed of.

2. Make sure the car's A/C and heating controls are turned off and the battery is disconnected.

3. First pump the refrigerant out of the system and place in an approved container.

4. Locate and remove the compressor belt (loosen the tensioner pulley first).

5. Locate and remove the electrical connections to the compressor. Disconnect the refrigerant lines and replace the caps to avoid releasing any residual Freon into the environment. Clean the refrigerant system. Unscrew and remove the compressor. Keep track of the bolts and their correct positions.

6. Replace all seals. Consider replacing the accumulator to reduce another potential source of problems. Reverse the process and bolt the new compressor in place first. Replace the Freon with pure refrigerant.
