This 50-cents Fifth Issue Fractional Note was
issued in 1875 and is a piece of American history. U.S. Fractional
Currency was issued only from 1862-1876 during a time when circulating coins
had nearly disappeared from circulation after the Civil War. They were
designed with an intricate design featuring the denomination "50
CENTS" and a portrait of William H. Crawford, Secretary of the
Treasury. The reverse side of the note was distinctive for its green ink
and decorative banners with the words, “United States” and Fifty Cents” are
shown above and below a beautiful ornate design in the middle with the numerical
"50 inside it. The Fifth Issue 50-cents fractional note signatures are
those of John Allison (JA) Register of the Treasury, and John Chalfant New
