Ruiru 11 Coffee (Coffea sp.) is a compact hybrid cultivar introduced in Kenya in the early 1980s to address the challenges of disease susceptibility and low yields in traditional Arabica lines. It was bred through controlled hybridization using selections from Catimor and SL varieties, combining resistance traits with desirable flavor qualities. Known for its resistance to coffee berry disease (CBD) and leaf rust, Ruiru 11 supports more sustainable coffee farming in humid and disease-prone regions. The beans produce a cup with bright acidity, medium body, and layered notes of red fruit, citrus peel, and floral undertones. The plant's short stature allows for closer spacing and higher density planting, making it efficient for land use. Ruiru 11 is also valued for its early maturity and consistent yield performance under varying elevations and farming systems. Its balance of agronomic advantages and flavor complexity has made it a reliable choice for many producers in East Africa.
