This is a beautiful antique metal ashtray. It's made from solid bronze and measures 3.5" wide by 3.75" long by .5" deep. The tray is primarily round with a nicely-sculpted anchor decorating the center and poking out around the lower edges. A braided shipping line is depicted in great detail around the top rim, complete with a knot where the design meets the anchor head. 'Behind' the anchor, rippling waves can be seen etched into the background. The back of this tray is fairly plain, though it does bear interesting sculpting marks from when its designs were being impressed.
Over the years, this item has developed an elegant patina, making it an ideal candidate for a restoration or a fine addition to an antique ashtray collection. It is still perfectly serviceable as an ashtray, but it works just as well as a paperweight, art piece, or decoration to add a nautical touch around the home or office.
Whether you're hoping to add a bit of unique Lake Erie tobacciana to your home decor or interested in owning a rare piece of Ohio national guard history, this time-tested tray may be just what you're looking for.
It was originally made in the early 1900s in the United States for Camp Perry, a storied national guard training facility in Port Clinton, Ohio located along the shores of Lake Erie. The name of the base can be seen stamped into the nose of the anchor (see photos).
