1972 Souvenir Sheet commemorating the nationalization (govt takeover) of the foreign-owned copper industry. Socialist Salvador Allende (1908-1973) had been elected President in 1970.  In 1971 he sent a bill to the Chilean Congress, which it passed in a unanimous vote, to take over the copper industry. His goal was to transform Chile from a capitalist to a socialist country.  Allende was overthrown in a coup, and killed, in 1973, led by General Pinochet, who was supported by the US CIA.
