VICTORIAN CLEAR GLASS

ENGRAVED GREEK KEY

FINGER BOWL

A beautiful example of wheel cut glass

From the Victorian era.

c.1875

This bowl has a wide border of a folded

ribbon that has a Greek Key design on

one side interwoven with a vine and

a deep star pattern underneath.

This border design has a very strong

Aesthetic Movement feel to it i.e.

the combination of geometric and

flowing foliage designs.

The star pattern was more than likely

wheel cut by hand but the decorative

band is very even all the way around and

could have been achieved by the use

of the geometric etching machine

invented in 1865 and which used both

the Greek Key and overlapping circles

 as its first designs.

Probably of European make but possibly

from the USA

I find it very difficult to photograph

clear glass satisfactorily so I hope

my pathetic videoing skills help a

little at least to show off how lovely

this Victorian finger bowl really is.

We have listed a matching wine glass too.

These are the only two pieces left from what

would have been a large and wonderful suite

of glassware from a very well-to-do house.
