The Patiala Kingdom,a princely state in British India, was founded by Ala Singh in 1762 and was a significant part of the Phulkian States.It later acceded to the Union of India in 1947 during the Indian independence and partition.The Maharaja of Patiala held a 17-gun salute and was recognized as the most prominent prince in the Punjab Province during the British Raj.The state was ruled by Jat Sikhs of the Sidhu clan.

Narendra Singh,was the Maharaja of the princely state of Patiala from 1846 to 1862. He was one of the first local rulers to receive the Order of the Star of Indiaand was a member of theIndian Legislative CouncilduringLord Canning's Viceroyalty.
