Rare Vintage Southern Evening Echo Newspaper Seller Anniversary Jug 1888 - 1988

This is a very rare porcelain toby jug depicting the Newspaper Seller produced by Shorter & Son, England, in 1988, it also has P. SMITH, the figure is hand painted so is most likely the artist signing his work.

Braving all varieties of weather, the Newspaper Seller stands at his corner every day hawking the latest edition of the local paper, the Southern Evening Echo, with the latest news and gossip, his job is to sell as many copies as he can every day to the passers-by. He is modelled in the style of a Victorian newspaper seller, with baggy trousers a short tail coat, a yellow scarf or cravat, with a cap over his long dark hair. He is stood beside his news stand, full of papers with a poster on the front with celebratory poster declaring: SOUTHERN EVENING ECHO 1888 – 1988. His face is wonderfully observed, calling out, to attract buyers and to earn his wage.

This jug was made to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Southern Daily Echo, a regional newspaper based in Southampton, covering the county of Hampshire in the United Kingdom.

The jug measures approx. 13.8cm tall by 5.5cm by 6.5cm. and is without damage.

 A wonderful rare toby jug.
