Pair of 18th Century Chinese Export Porcelain Plates with ‘Cheng Lung’ Mark and Garden Scene in Underglaze Blue
This exquisite pair of antique Chinese porcelain plates offers a unique blend of elegance and history. The hand-painted design features blooming trees, rocks, and a garden fence in classic cobalt blue underglaze—highly favored among European elites. These plates are not only eye-catching display pieces, but also tangible relics of cultural exchange between East and West. A rare opportunity to own a piece of VOC-era heritage.
Maker / Manufacturer:
The mark “成隆製造” (Cheng Lung Zhi Zao) translates to “Made by Cheng Lung.” This is not an imperial mark but rather a trade name of a private workshop active during the Qing dynasty, most likely in Jingdezhen. Such marks were typically used on export porcelain to denote quality for European customers, especially Dutch buyers.
Use / Decoration:
These plates were made as tableware for the European market—part of the so-called Chine de Commande (porcelain made specifically for export). While functional, the refined hand-painting suggests they were primarily meant as decorative showpieces. The imagery of blossoms, rocks, and fencing reflects traditional Chinese themes of prosperity and harmony. Keywords: Chinese porcelain, export ware, VOC-era, Qianlong, blue and white plates, antique wall display.
Gift Idea:
Looking for a one-of-a-kind gift for a wedding, anniversary, or birthday? These antique plates are ideal for lovers of history, Asian art, antique tableware, or VOC-related heritage. A thoughtful and timeless gift for collectors or a luxurious housewarming present with character and charm.
