[Kinzo Okamoto (1914-2001)]
Born in Kurashiki in 1914. His father was the Japanese painter Toyo Okamoto.
After graduating from the Ceramics Department of Kyoto Municipal Technical School No. 2, he worked at the National Ceramic Testing Institute.
He researched glazes and published papers such as "Considerations on Celadon."
In 1934, he retired from the research institute, set up a kiln in Gojozaka, Kyoto, and began his creative endeavors. In the same year, he founded and became president of the Kyoto Takumi-kai, an organization of artisans in ceramics, lacquerware, metalwork, and other fields.
In 1951, he returned to Kurashiki and built Tenjin Kiln.
In 1961, he succeeded in creating a prototype of bone china, which he later named Suimeiji.
In 1967, he completed the creation of the Touzan Tenmoku porcelain, which was thought to be impossible to create intentionally using glazes from the Song Dynasty in China.
In addition to these, he developed a series of new glazes based on research he had conducted during his time at the laboratory, including the high-temperature wisteria purple glaze Shixin Glaze, which was released in 1974, and Tao Shoukou.
In 1972, he received the Okayama Prefecture Cultural Encouragement Award.
In 1988, he received the Okayama Prefecture Miki Memorial Award.
Died in 2001.
