This is an original press photo. United States Army Engineer District, Detroit. St. Mary's Falls Canal, Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Boats. Dredges. Channel maintenance work or the start of new projects in the St. Mary's River necessitates the use of a subsistence and quarters boat by the Army Engineers for its survey crews when work involved is located in remote areas. Pictured here is the "St. Marys" employed as a subsistence and quarters boat since 1931 and accommodating a maximum of 22 men presently assigned to survey work on the St. Marys River in conjunction with the Great Lakes connecting channels project.Photo measures 10 x 8.25inches. Photo is dated 10--1960.
