The monograph presents a new concept of the origin of the names Rus' and Varangians. The Scandinavian origin of these names is denied and the position that both names arose among the Baltic Slavs is substantiated. The evidence in favor of the Norman (Scandinavian) theory of the origin of the name Rus' is carefully considered: the testimony of the Berlin Chronicle from 839; the story of Liudprand, Bishop of Cremona; the story of John the Deacon about the Norman campaign around 865 against Byzantium; the story of Ahmed al-Yakubi about the attack of the Rus' on Seville; the names of the Rus' princes, ambassadors and merchants, which are given in the treaties of Oleg and Igor with the Greeks; the names of the Dnieper rapids, which were reported by the Byzantine emperor Constantine the Red-Blooded in his work "On the Administration of the Empire".
