Original socio-psychological short stories reflect the atmosphere of life in Western Ukraine at the turn of the 19th–20th centuries, impress with the power of artistic truth, sharply realistic pictures, deep psychologism and unusual plot solutions. V. Stefanyk is the founder of a completely new genre of short prose in Ukrainian literature - the European psychological short story. In the manner of descriptions, the author is free from the populist idealization of the village, uses minimalist descriptiveness, is the creator of the concept of "image without a frame", is distinguished by the borderline laconicism of plots. The lively language of short stories, in particular the use of the Pokut dialect, makes his short prose a unique phenomenon in the territory of Ukrainian literary heritage.
