In 2014 Randy Burman responded to this original O, Miami Call for Proposals with the proposal that follows:

"O, Miami, a poetry festival in Miami, Florida, is currently accepting proposals for projects
and events to occur during April 2014. The mission of O, Miami Festival is for every single person in Greater Miami to encounter a poem during the month of April."

    ARTIST/POET:
    Randy Burman

    PROJECT/EVENT NAME
    Poetry Traffic Signs

    PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Create 12" x 18" traffic signs made to look identical to standard traffic signs (No Parking, etc.) except they will have short poems on them. These would be installed throughout Miami and Miami Beach, never replacing or covering official signs, but attached to existing poles.

The artist poet will supervise the installation of the signs and work with a videographer to produce project documentation.

    Examples:
    Birds in
    adjacent cages

“The underlying premise of most urban art interventions is to challenge the functional use of urban space and disrupt the social relationships integral to public life. They materialize as an extensive range of ephemeral constructions, spontaneous installations and assemblages, and eccentric performances that challenge a “normative” organization of city space.”

–Elisha Masemann, Urban Interventions and Molecular Flows in Drain magazine

RANDY BURMAN'S COMMENTS ON THE PROJECT:
This is poetry off the page and in the street. Meant to intervene into normal situations and turn them, if momentarily, into literary experiences and hopefully stimulate a heightened sensorial elation in the observers. Each of the ten poems were written by different poets. Some overtly reference standard traffic sign instructions or warnings and others range from humorous mischievousness, to allusion to suggestions of profundity.

The use of the term "bureaucratic" is ironic for this project where the status quo bureaucracies are purposely being circumvented. The local bureaucracies are by nature inclined to object to the loosening of their rules, which are not concerned with artists' desire to intervene into the established law and order.
    ________
Video artist Giancarlo Loffredo created a graffiti-style video titled Poetic Injustice of the poetry sign installations that can be seen on Randy Burman's You Tube channel along with another video, Department of Poetry Works Interview with Randy Burman
    ______
I was startled when I saw one of the poetry signs as we were coming out of the Busy Bee Car Wash on Biscayne Blvd... surprised since I hadn't installed it there.

    LARGE INSTALLATION ARTWORKS
One of several large original artworks by artist, Randy Burman being exclusively offered here for purchase, preferably to museum or gallery. Each was made for a specific museum and/or gallery installation and often exhibited in more than one exhibition. Since the art work(s) are in storage and could not be weighed or final dimensions of shipping crates accurately calculated the cost excludes shipping and is listed here as local pick-up only. Custom shipping services, including crating and insurance can be coordinated with the buyer once the sale is finalized. Additional arrangements can be made, as the works require assembly, for the artist to travel to location to manage set-up. Descriptions of the works include the standard materials and size specifications as well as any collected commentary and news articles about the work and the exhibition(s). Photo documentation of the works on display as well as working and submission drawings are also included in the description.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
RANDY BURMAN has a serious preoccupation with the intuitive aspects of art making. There is an internal dichotomy that drives his creative process on several levels: he’s compelled to make serious statements, but finds himself subverting that goal with irreverent humor. precise execution is integral, yet playful strategies are often a point of departure. Though he toggles
between these parts of his practice, the recurring result is work that engages the alchemy of juxtaposed elements, meanings and scale.

Though the execution is very exact, the starting point is often circumstantial. Seeing some found objects resting next to each other might act as the beginning of a piece. Other times work comes out of the leftover materials= from separate projects or the appropriation of visual material from a swathe of sources. The resulting sculptures, installations, paintings and print media explore themes of identity while often encouraging dynamic interaction with the audience.

Drawing widely from popular culture, art history, information design, and social and political events, his practice is based on bringing together disparate formal elements to reveal hidden, compelling connections, and seeks to reveal the cultural forces that develop unintentionally in the real and digital worlds of objects, material, and ideas.

The tone of his work – a back and forth between weighty intellectualism and flippancy – is deeply personal. his involvement in the counter-culture movements in the 1960s and 70s led him to question the history of fine art as much as the political and institutional\ regimes that dominate in the United States, a critique which often gets expressed in the form of humor. These aspects of his own development have also resulted in yet another dichotomy in his practice – the utilization of destruction as a means for creating. Several pieces have involved the poaching of significant works by canonical artists, which are cut up, re-assembled, collaged, and in some cases, completely annihilated.

Whether he’s meticulously creating or blatantly destroying for the sake of art, the experience of sublimity is the destination, and wit is often the means of arrival.
