The German painter and graphic artist Max Ackermann, one of the pioneers of abstract art in Germany. From 1906 until 1910, he studied in Weimar, under Henry van der Velde and later in Munich under Franz von Stuck before becoming a student of Adolf Hölzel in Stuttgart from 1912. The latter significantly influenced his tendency towards abstraction which, in 1930, lead to the founding of a seminar on “absolute painting” at the Stuttgart “Volkshochschule” (adult education centre). Banned from his profession by the National Socialists, he relocated to Lake Constance in 1936; his studio in Stuttgart and with it a majority of his early works were destroyed during a bombing raid in 1943. His works received public acclaim in the postwar years: besides numerous exhibitions, Ackermann was the guest of honour at the German Academy Villa Massimo in Rome in 1964 and received the Federal Cross of Merit in 1972, three years prior to his death.

Good overall condition, minor ripple to the sheet, minor marks commensurate with age.
