1943 Press Photo Martha Huber insulates metal equipment pieces for Westinghouse
This is an original press photo. Cleveland, Ohio -- Hot pitch, much like that used to tar roofs and streets, gets a new kind of job helping to protect these sockets for airport contact lights. This worker at the Cleveland Lighting Division of the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company drops a blob of pitch over a brass screw-head, insulating against the flow of electric current which might take an erratic course if the screw-head were left exposed. By pressing a foot pedal, the worker releases the required amount of pitch from the tank, which is lined with an electric heating unit to keep the pitch at an evenly high temperature. Martha Huber, the worker pictured above, can complete her work on thousands of sockets daily. Photo measures 8.25 x 10.25inches. Photo is dated 10-24-1943.
