A delay-on-break timer in HVACR systems is 

an electronic device that prevents a compressor 

from restarting immediately after it shuts off, 

allowing the refrigerant pressures to equalize 

and the compressor to cool down before restarting, 

thus preventing excessive wear and tear on the compressor due to "short cycling"
