19th C. Bohemian Yellow Ware Bowl
Unusual basket weave bowl of sanded yellow ware with a large classical medallion in the center made by Anton Tschinkel, Eichwald, Bohemia / Austria circa 1870. Though hard to see in the photo,"A.TSCHINKEL / 2" is impressed on the base. Active c1864-c1885 in Eichwald which was part of Austro-Hungary and later Bohemia. His pottery made figurines and decorative & useful ceramics in yellow ware with gilt and other trims. In this case sand was applied to the clay on the top before firing to give a grainy texture. The bowl is 9 1/2" across and 2 1/4" deep and even though it's made of numerous separate rods it is in undamaged condition. Quite a rare survivor and an exceptional piece of pottery making. The gilt-trimmed central medallion has a raised portrait bust of a man in a classical Greek or Roman helmet.
